InkaGold Mixed Media Card for Guys

When I found out the latest challenge for Seize the Birthday was Circles... well my mind started spinning.

You see... I'd been working on an art project a couple of months ago and had cut out an excessive amount of die cut circles. Like WAY more than I wound up needing. So now I have a bag full of a gazillion circles that make me mad every time I look at them because they were SO MUCH WORK.

Well, they came in handy because I'm guest designing for Seize the Birthday through the end of the month.

Their Toppings theme this time around is "Circles". You can really make any kind of birthday card you want and link it up to their challenge, but they give you an optional theme every time, too.

I created a shiny background using a wet paintbrush and some InkaGold. I'm definitely going to be making more backgrounds like this because, in the end, it looked like brushed copper. So pretty!

I ran my painted background through my embossing machine, using an embossing folder with a clock print.

The circles were cut out on white paper, then I used my fingers to slather some green, gold and copper InkaGolds all over. Looooove the textural look of the circles.

I stamped a sentiment and old-fashioned car from a Unity kit to complete my design.

I'm going to play along at:
More Mixed Media Challenge - Anything Goes (option of black)

I also used the color scheme from The Color Throwdown.

So. What's circling in your brain? Give the latest challenge over at Seize the Birthday a try!

Growing in Unity Gal - Guest Designer

The first time I ever laid eyes on a Unity stamp, I fell in love with the sketchy, pretty designs. My aunt is a Unityaholic and she let me use some of her stamps while I was slowly growing my own collection.

It seems like Unity is always having one sale or another and my wallet complains to me every time I go check out their deals (but my heart rejoices... so suck it, wallet!)

This week, I get the opportunity to be a guest designer for Unity *happy dances* and I'll be sharing a new design every day this week!

I haven't played much with my Distress Inks lately - gasp! - so I remedied that but doing some Distress Ink watercoloring.

pink_ranger_tim_holtz_distress_inks

I stamped a floral arrangement from the First Friend, Best Friend, Forever set. Next, I smooshed three different colors of pinks onto my craft mat, then used a wet paintbrush to pick up the ink.

watercolor_distress_ink

This is why I love Distress Inks - you can stamp with them, but you can also do so many different techniques like watercoloring.

I also used some Distress blues and greens to color in the leaves and water.

Since I had a lot of color left over on my craft mat after I was done watercoloring my image, I used the Distress Ink double dipping technique to marble a piece of paper.

distress_ink_stamped_birthday_card_layers_tim_holtz_unity

I layered my focal image with black, white, and bits of gold, adding in a strip of my marbled panel. I finished it off by stamping a sentiment from the For the Guys stamp set.

This whole design was inspired by the latest challenge at If you Give a Crafter a Cookie

I loved the combo of patterns and colors going on and HAD to try to replicate that on a card

I'm also going to enter my card over at Seize the Birthday. I'm not using the Aqua/Green optional toppings, but I wanted to play along anyhow.

Also, if you're feeling like leaving some extra bloggy love today go check out my fellow GIU gal for the week - Rebecca Wong Pui Yee. Who doesn't love a Rebecca?!

And make sure you leave a comment on my blog!! Unity is giving away two stamp sets to those of you who are kind enough to drop some lines below!

A Beau-Tea-Full Mixed Media Card - Card Concept Guestie

There's nothing better than when you look at an inspiration image for a challenge and instantly know exactly what to do .

That's what happened to me when my peepers beheld this stunner for the latest Card Concept challenge:

I'm guest designing with the Card Concept team for the month of May and it has been SO much fun!! When you are surrounded by talented people - like the design team of Card Concept - you can't help but to be inspired and put your best foot forward!

For this card, I started by gessoing a piece of heavy weight cardstock and then I scribbled on some Distress Crayons:

OOoooo messy!
As soon as I saw the scribbles, I knew I'd created a masterpiece and so I put my supplies away.

Just kidding! haha

In reality, I used my finger to smear the Distress Crayon and create a smoother look.

You heard me mention earlier that I gessoed the page before I applied the Distress Crayon.

Why?

I'm glad you asked!

Check out the difference between these two backgrounds. The one on the left has been gessoed and the one on the right just plain paper. You can see that the Distress Crayons don't look very smooth on the right side and it's picking up the texture of the cardstock.

So if you want a smooth, more blendable version of Distress Crayons, make sure to slap some gesso on the page first.

And now, back to the card:

Over the Distress Crayon background, I used some gold texture paste through a stencil. Next, I stamped the teacup from STAMPlorations Always Tea Time set and paired it with a sentiment from my Literary Caffeine-ations set.  I colored the cup in with Spectrum Noir Markers.

This little shabby chic mixed media number made me oh-so-happy so I was DONE!

Thanks for popping by my blog to check out my card.
I'd love to see you play along at the Card Concept this month!

Card Concept Guestie - It's Me! Sunshine Mixed Media Card

I'm so so so excited because the amazing Lesley asked me to be a guestie for the Card Concept!! >>insert happy dance here<< Their design team is SO talented and filled with top-notch cardmakers from ALL aesthetic backgrounds. CAS, shabby chic, mixed media - you name it!

I was thrilled when I saw the inspiration image because I'd just purchased the Rise Above set from Verve stamps and knew exactly how to put the adorable little sun to use.

I started by creating some faux grungy polka dots on a group of tags.

distress_spray_stain_tagusing_distress_crayons_for_cards

First, I sprayed my tags with a trio of yellow Distress Spray Stains - Scattered Straw, Squeezed Lemonade and Fossilized Amber. Then I ran them through a polka dotted embossing folder and used the Vintage Photo Distress Crayon to highlight the raised areas.

Next, I made a background using Distress Spray Stain (Wild Honey, Spiced Marmalade, Scattered Straw), gesso, texture paste and heated embossing powder.

I die cut the sun from my Rise Above set and embossed a sentiment from the same set. I outlined my sun and the tags with a bronze metallic Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pen and added some cork letters.

I backed the image with some DCWV printed burlap and put the whole thing together. It's so bright and fun and textural. I definitely loved playing and trying new techniques to create this little lovely.

I'll be a guestie with the Card Concept for the whole month of May so you'll have to stay tuned to see what else I've created. In the meantime make sure you head over to see what the rest of the incredible design team produced!

I'm also going to send this over to the Anything But Cute Challenge, who are having a Anything Goes Challenge Mixed Media Challenge .

Thanks for popping by! I hope you'll leave me a comment or follow my blog so I can return the favor!

Guestie! It's Me! At Through the Craft Room Door

A while backskies I had the great honor of winning a challenge at Through The Craft Room Door, an online magazine that I like to peruse from time-to-time. When they asked me to be a guestie, of course I said "Of COURSE!".

I got to play around with a digi stamp from Imagine That digi stamps called I Wheely Like You. It got my pun-loving heart a-beating.

Here's what I designed:

I'm going to play along over at Shopping our Stash where the theme is something for teen or adult boys. Since I rarely go masculine, I had fun with this! Plus, everything I used is from my scrap pile, so I'm still patting myself on the back for that.

Thanks for popping by and I hope you'll hop on over to Through the Craft Room Door to see what their very talented design team made!

Cute Halloween Card - Inkspirational Guest Designer

I don't know about you, but I am a HUGE hoarder of craft supplies. Last year when I first started blogging, I was introduced to "blog candy" and I won a big ol' package of October Afternoon Halloween supplies. Unfortunately, they came in the mail after Halloween was already over, so I haven't played with them at all!

But thanks to Inkspirational challenge, I now have a reason!
They asked me to Guest Design for their latest challenge, which is cute Halloween (or pumpkins/owls for those who don't do Halloween cards)

I started out with some of the awwww-dorable vintagey Halloween images from the Witch Hazel embellishment pack, and then I picked out some graphic prints from the matching Witch Hazel paper pack.

Isn't it sooooo cute? I finished it off by building my own sentiment from the STAMPlorations Joyful set

I'm also going to send this fun card over to the following challenges:

Friday Mashup - Create a project using ribbon OR for Halloween
Fusion - I used the theme - All Ha1low's Eve

Thanks for popping by! Hope to see you all playing along at Inkspirational

Tissue Paper, Gelatos, and Stars - Oh MY! Cardz 4 Guyz GD

Holy flibbertigibbets (which I learned this week IS an ACTUAL word... thanks to what I am assuming is a dictionary editor who got a little tipsy one day)! Have I ever got a textural card for you!!

Well... not literally for you... It's actually for my card stash. But that's not the point. The point is that I'm going to SHOW you a textural card.

This week also marks the last Tuesday of March, which means my Guest Design team with Cardz 4 Guyz is coming to an end. *Insert sad face here* I've so enjoyed thinking about the guy-side of things this month because I so often forget to do that!

The challenge over at Cardz is to use something that starts with an "S".

Hence: A STAR!!

Whenever I get an order from STAMPlorations, Shery always wraps the stamps in tissue paper. Since I am a weirdo hoarder of all things that could potentially be stuck on a card at some point in time, I have a stack of tissue paper just lazing about unused in my craft room.

Here's how I made my background:

I began by painting my card stock with a thin layer of Matte Gel and then stuck some crinkled up tissue paper to it. I then painted over it with another layer of Matte Gel and let it dry. Then, because I wanted to use gelatos and didn't want my tissue paper to tear, I painted over the whole thing with gesso.

Then I applied alternating diagonal rows of bright blue and bright green Gelatos to the base and blended with my finger and some water.

Next, I applied some blue ink through a swirly stencil (STAMPlorations Confetti Circles) and then moved the stencil to a different area and applied texture paste. Then I let that dry. (Oh pssssh, yeah right - I totally used my heat gun to speed up the process.)

I sponged the edges and raised areas of the background with Black Soot Distress Ink to really bring out the great texture, and to grunge it up a bit. I added a star from a die cut pack and placed it behind some teal baker's twine. Then I added the In a Word: Happy die from Winnie and Walter and stamped birthday onto the star.

This is definitely a technique I'll be trying again, because I am in L-O-V-E with all that texture and drama.

So if you are thinking of the Fellas this week in your card making, put something with an S on it and go play along at Cardz 4 Guyz!

I'm also sending my card over to the following challenges:

Seize the Birthday - Anything Goes Birthday

Addicted to Stamps - Stars
Through the Craft Room Door - Anything Goes
Little Red Wagon - You're a Star
Friday Mashup - Sketch or Masculine project

Thanks for stopping by! Follow my blog or leave me a comment and I'll try to return the favor! Happy Tuesday!

Faux Metal Background Distress Paints Tutorial - Cardz 4 Guyz Guest Designer

As many of you may already know, my good-deal loving self picked up an entire cart load of Distress Paints when they were on clearance at Michael's a couple of months ago. Aaaaand then about a month later I got a 30 percent off deal at my local craft store for Distress Stains. What was a girl to do, but to add those to the collection, too? Today I'm going to share a technique tutorial that resulted from a very messy experiment session.

P.S. (yes I know that means POST script, but I'm a rebel) I would warn you that this is a picture heavy posting, but A) I don't believe in warning people - it's better that they find out what they've gotten themselves into after they're too far sucked in (that's how I've gotten all my boyfriends) and B) Who doesn't like pictures?

Anywho, I've used my new crafty products once or twice, but mostly they've been woefully staring at me from their mesh bag home. In an effort to remind myself to use them more, I've given them a new, shiny home and plopped them right on my crafting table.

That storage holder thing-a-ma-bob is actually a spice rack that I purchased at a garage sale for a paltry $5. Woot! So now you know, A spice rack holds spray stains perfectly and Distress Paints perfectly!

Now back to the card. I'm guest designing over at Cardz 4 Guyz this month and the theme this week is transportation. I have these old trucks from the Tim Holtz "Enjoy the Journey" set and thought I'd create a background to compliment them.

Step One:

Dab a bunch of Salty Ocean and Wild Honey Distress Paints
on a piece of cardstock:

Step Two:

Make sure layer one is completely dry (you can speed this along with a heat gun) and then apply Tarnished Bronze Distress Paint over the top. Use an flat object to scrape the paint in a thin layer (I used the edge of an acrylic block, but you could use a spatula or a credit card, or even a thick piece of cardstock).

You can scrape the paint side to side in areas and up and down in other areas for added visual interest. You can also add dabbed areas on top (see right picture) for more texture. It's ok if bits of the first layer show through!

PAUSE!

At this point your background will look a lil' something like this. You can just stop here and you'll have that aged metal effect. But I wanted a little more texture, so I added a couple more steps.

Step 3:

(optional)
Add an embossing powder for more texture

While the paint was still wet, I selectively added an embossing powder called Rusted Metal (it's really old, so I can't tell you where I got it) and then heat dried.

Step 4:

Spray it all over with Black Soot Distress Spray Stain

Let it sit for a second or two, and then dab up excess with a paper towel. And then you will have....

An amazingly textural background that looks like oxidized metal!

Now the real question was what to do with it. I opted to use an NBUS Embossing Folder that my Design Team Coordinator, Samantha Aguilera sent to me. (Big thanks!)

I stamped an old truck using a three part process. First in Wild Honey Distress Inks, then in Evergreen Bough, then in embossing with the same Rusted Metal powder. I also used some chipboard and added embossing powder and Salty Ocean Distress Paint to the edges to achieve that oxidized effect again.

For not being a guy cardmaker, I really loved the way this turned out and want to super thank Cardz 4 Guyz for reminding me that boy cards can be tons of fun, too!

I'm also going to link my card up to the following challenges:
Mixed Media World - Anything Goes
Craft Stamper Magazine - Use a Stamp
NBUS Challenge (because Darnell is the BEST!)
Through the Craft Room Door - Anything Goes
Retro Sketches - Thanks for the great sketch!

Whew! Well you got through all the pictures. Thank you for coming over and for sticking with me! And you should totally check out Cardz 4 Guyz, too!!!
